People will have various perceptions and expectations of management consulting depending on their background. I came from a software engineering degree and I had no idea that a company like CVA would offer so many opportunities and challenges.
I am constantly faced with new challenges at CVA and I never know what is around the corner. My first case was in the banking industry and I worked on five different sub-projects including partner selection, M&A, valuation, business strategy development and joint venture establishment. It was a bit daunting in the beginning, but the partners and managers provided clear direction and were willing to share their experience. So I was able to gradually build up my knowledge base and confidence in what I was doing.
CVA has many offices around the world and offers extensive travelling opportunities based on case requirements. Hence, you are likely to work with colleagues from different offices. I have been working in both Sydney and Shanghai offices in the past few years. While there are many differences between the two offices in terms of working environment and office culture, they both share an enthusiasm for "fun" activities – whether it's a cruise in Melbourne or a karaoke night in Shanghai!
One of my most memorable experiences has been the CVA Challenge. Consultants from all CVA offices gathered together in the beautiful Malaysian island of Langkawi. We spent 6 days on the island participating in a CVA-tailored business case and outdoor group activities. Apart from enjoying newly developed friendship and sunshine in the tropics, we learnt useful methodologies and techniques through intensive case-based training.
The cases I have worked upon have been really enjoyable, as have the internal CVA activities I have been lucky enough to attend. I'm sure that more excitement is waiting for me in the future too!
